LIVE IN REPENTANCE We often hear from others concerning repentance, that it is for the Jews only. Whereupon the apostle Peter had admonished them before receiving the gospel that saves, as written in the book of Acts 3:19. However, in Paul's letter to the Ephesians, we will note from reading a couple of verses before Paul’s favorite verse: Ephesians 2:8-9, the description of those who had received grace; (see Ephesians 2:1-3) that they were all living in repentance. Hence, Paul added the famous verse: Ephesians 2:10 to his favorite verse - in line with his 2 Corinthians: 5:17 - while the apostle James, in his part, wrote about dead faith (James 2:19-21) in his letter - in connection to what Paul imparted as well. PAUL’S FOREWARNING
Among Paul’s longest letters is 1st Corinthians, covering various topics especially on the bizarre twists to ethical issues. But chapter 5 turned out to be his unprecedented letter in the New Testament that revealed such of Paul’s emotions. It is likened to a parent’s reaction when informed of his child’s shocking behavior in school, but at the same time showing an air of intimacy in giving a well-deserved scolding as from a grieved parent. “I am not writing this to shame you,” says Paul, “but to warn you, as my dear children.”(4:14). in it, Paul gives practical advice on the church problem not only for his day but also I suppose for today. He then gave wisdom-filled advice from God who had blessed him with knowledge. (Galatians 1:11-12) I would say to ensure the edification of the church towards Spiritual purity. See Ephesians 5:27:
27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
1 st Corinthians Chapter 5 starts with his reaction to the report concerning a member of the congregation having his father’s wife. From there, he moves on to give his rationale concerning his recommendation on the matter and what to do to maintain holiness in the Church, starting in verse 6:
6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a {{{brother or sister}}} but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.
12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? {{{Are you not to judge those inside?}}} 13 God will judge those outside. {{{“Expel the wicked person from among you.”}}}
[Deut. 13:5; 17:7; 19:19; 21:21; 22:21,24; 24:7]
